Frescos in Villa dei Misteri, Pompeii

One of the main chambers in the Villa dei Misteri contains a fresco around the walls which illustrates the initiation of a woman into the secret rites of Dionysus. The images are lifesize. Dionysus was the most popular god for Roman women. He was the source of both their sensual and their spiritual hopes.
