It's quite a walk on a hot day up through the streets of Pompeii and out through the Herculaneum
Gate to the Villa dei Misteri, but if it's quiet, it's worth the walk. We went early in the morning
just after the site had opened and had the Villa to ourselves.
This villa, built around a central peristyle court and surrounded by terraces, is much like other
large villas of Pompeii except that this is outside the gates of the city. The wall paintings are great
and the colours vibrant.
The name of the villa refers to the frescos around the walls of one of the main chambers showing secret
initiation rites.
