Early Bath house Hypocaust in the early Bath house Steps to the furnance, later Bath house

Two bath houses have been excavated at Vindolanda. The earliest dates from around 100 AD but was later demolished as being too big for the later garrison. The hypocaust above belongs to the Caldarium of the earlier bath house. The second bath house was built in about 215 AD. Its well preserved walls are more than 2m height in places. Finds from the sewers suggest that it was used by civilians as well are the military staff. It is smaller than the earlier one and even the hypocaust is built in stone.
