Hadrian's Wall extended west from Segedunum at Wallsend (Newcastle) on the River Tyne to the shore of the Solway Firth at Bowness. A significant portion of the wall still exists, particularly the mid-section, and the wall can be followed for much of its length. In Newcastle only small parts of the wall still stand and it can require detective work to find them without a good guide book. The first piece is at Wallsend and is across the road from the Segedunum Roman Fort. It includes a reconstructed section alongside the remains of the original wall. The second piece is under Newcastle Castle. Then in the outskirts of Newcastle there are several tantilising glimpses.
Benwell was the site of a fort called Condercum. It is now covered with modern housing but the defensive Roman ditch (the Vallum) can still clearly be seen along with the nearby ruins of a Roman temple dedicated to a local god (Antenociticus).
There is a small fragment of the wall on the West Road near the Denton road roundabout, which has survived somehow, but more fragments further west in Denton (see Denton to Chesters).
