Hadrian's Wall                 Vindolanda Roman Fort Vindolanda Roman Fort

These demonstration sections of wall show a short length of stone wall with a turret and a length of turf wall with a timber milecastle. The turf wall has sunk by over a metre since it was built more than 30 years ago, but still acts as a strong barrier.
When the wall was first built in around AD 120, the western third was constructed in timber and turf as shown here, but was later converted to stone. Even in wood, it must have been an impressive barrier, with a steep ditch on the outer side.
