Historically East Anglia includes the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk with
Cambridgeshire, but for my purposes I am taking the more modern definition
of the East of England which also includes Essex, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.
East Anglia was named after one of the ancient Anglo-Saxon kingdoms,
the Kingdom of the East Angles, which was in turn named after the homeland of
the Angles, Angeln in northern Germany. The history of this area goes back
at least 2000 years and some of the photographs that I have gathered
together will show the historical sites.
The Iceni lived in East Anglia about 2000 years ago and an Iceni village has
been recreated in Norfolk. In historical order, the next photographs are
of the reconstructed Norman Mountfitchet Castle. Then two Suffolk castles,
Framlington and Orford. Both castles were built
more than 1000 years ago and have been used for various things since then - have
a look at the pages to find out more.
