Upnor Castle

Upnor Castle was built on the orders of Queen Elizabeth I as an artillery fortress in 1559 to protect the new Chatham Dockyard and the fleet anchorage in the Medway.
It was strengthened in 1600 with the addition of a large gatehouse as well as two towers, north and south of the original keep and a ditch in front of the walls.
It saw action during a raid by the Dutch in 1667 and was later converted into a huge gunpowder magazine.
