Orford Castle stands beside the pretty town and former port which
Henry II also developed here in the 1160s. The surrounding flat countryside
makes the Castle visible for miles.
The unique polygonal tower of
the Castle survives almost intact and is an interesting place to visit to
see how these castles might have been used. Inside the Keep's thick stone
walls this castle was designed to be a fortified residence, with spiral
stairs inside each of the towers leading to a maze of rooms and passageways.
