The orientation of the Fort is unusual in that its long axis is arranged parallel with Hadrian's Wall (which forms its northern defensive wall). This is probably due to the location on the top of the hill with a steep escarpment to the north. It is also unusual for Britain in that it has no running water supply and is dependent upon rainwater collection (for which there are a series of large stone-lined tanks inside the walls of the Fort).

More of the stone work remains here than in most of the other Forts, possibly because of it's isolated location. It also has one of the best-preserved stone latrines in Roman Britain.
