The Coastal Pacific Train travels from Picton to Christchurch down the Pacific
Coast of South Island, New Zealand. Picton is the arrival and departure point for
the ferry from Wellington (North Island) and lies close to the head of Queen
Charlotte Sound. The train, used by locals and tourists alike, travels down the
coast through the Marlborough vineyards stopping at Blenheim and Kaikoura.
The train carriages are new and very comfortable. There is also an outside
viewing carriage (better for photographers) but remember to buy your warm Possum
and Merino mittens, hat and scarf because it's cold out there in the wind. Along
98 kilometres of ruggedly beautiful coastline there are some great views of the
Pacific coast, the steeply rising Kaikoura Ranges
and the farming landscape of the Canterbury Plains.
