The TranzAlpine Train travels from Christchurch to Greymouth over the Southern
Alps of South Island, New Zealand. The train starts from the rolling countryside
of the Canterbury Plains and climbs slowly up the steep sides of the Southern Alps
following the Waimakariri river back up into the mountains to Arthur's Pass.
Then through the Otira Tunnel (when the observation carriage is closed because
of the fumes) and down along the Arnold River Valley to Greymouth on the West
Coast.
The observation carriage is even colder than on the Coastal Pacific train so
be prepared.
