Acton Burnell Castle is the remains of a fortified manor house built in the
13th century by Robert Burnell, Bishop of Bath and Wells and Chancellor of
England. He was a close friend of King Edward I. The King was a regular
visitor and it is said that he convened one of the first English Parliaments
to be attended by the Commons here in 1283.
The castle continued to survive until it was replaced by a more modern
building in 1814. Acton Burnell Hall was built in Classical style by the
Smythe family and Acton Burnell Castle became a folly on the grounds.
Entry to the grounds is by an ancient yew-lined path. When you arrive at the
castle, you are greeted by a beautiful Cedar of Lebanon and the inner shell
of what was once a very grand building.
