The small town of Rye, in East Sussex, England is a Cinque Port. It used to be
almost entirely surrounded by the English Channel, but storms in the English Channel
in the 13th century coupled with reclamation of the bay blocked the entrance to the
port. Rye now stands at the confluence of two rivers, the Rother and the Tillingham and
is a seaside town (and port) where the sea is almost two miles away.
The historic centre, known as the Citadel, sits on top of the rocky outcrop and is full
of cobbled streets and old houses.
