The Castle was neglected from 1718 until it was purchased by
the Cowdray family in 1925. The 1st Viscountess Cowdray embarked on
a systematic programme of repair. Since then the Castle has remained
in the Cowdray (Pearson) family, and has been open to visitors.
It is a very windswept and desolate place which would have been easy
to defend. Even as a group of ruins it is very atmospheric. It's one
of the few castles that I have visited which still has a "village"
feel with a range of structures within the outer walls.
