Etal was originally a manor house but was fortified in 1341 to protect the
Manners family from Scottish raids and disputes with the Heron family of Ford
Castle just down the road. It only surrendered once in 1513 when faced with
heavy cannon and was returned to the owners after the Battle of Flodden.
The Castle fell out of use in the 18th Century when a new
manor house was built at the other end of the village. Much of the Gatehouse,
the Keep and some of the defensive walls remain.
