Ford Castle Water Fountain Forge Ford Castle

Ford Castle dates from about 1278. Sir William Heron was granted a licence to crenellate in 1338. The Castle was captured by the Scots in 1385 and dismantled by them. However by the beginning of the 16th century it had been rebuilt and refortified. It was captured by the Scots on the eve of the Battle of Flodden Field in 1513 but returned shortly afterwards. Sir Francis Blake of Cogges, Oxfordshire built a substantial mansion in Tudor style within the castle in 1694.
In 1761 John Delaval, 1st Baron Delaval, rebuilt the Hall with the assistance of architect George Ruffield in a Gothic style. In 1862 Louisa, Dowager Marchioness of Waterford, restored and substantially remodelled the Hall. It now operates as a residential centre for young people. It wasn't open when I was in the area.
Ford village is very much an estate village and the water fountain and forge were particularly photogenic.
