Cragside was a good place to work - OK, it is quite isolated, but the house had central heating and a number of labour-saving devices including a dumb waiter to carry stores to/from the kitchen, an automatic turner for the spit, a hydralic lift to the bedrooms, running water to some rooms and a primitive washing machine.
