Barnard Castle, in the ancient capital of Teesdale, was built by Bernard de Bailliol
between 1112 and 1132. The castle passed into the hands of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick.
King Richard III inherited it through his wife, Anne Neville. The Castle remained
a fortress until 1569 when, during the Great Rebellion in the reign of Queen Elizabeth,
it was held in the Queens' name by Sir George Bowes of Streatlam for eleven days against
the insurgents. The dismantling began in 1630 and has continued. The remains are now
in the care of English Heritage.
