Tobago is the little sister island to Trinidad, but has a stronger
tourist industry. It is much more like the traditional image of a Caribbean
island with beautiful beaches backed by green forested mountains. It used
to be a very affluent plantation island, but was
declared bankrupt when the sugar and cocoa plantations failed in the late
19th Century. It now concentrates on tourism, farming and fishing. The
capital of the island is Scarborough and Fort King George sits on the hill
overlooking the town. The scuba diving is excellent and the flora and fauna
bring lots of visitors. One of the most popular beaches is at Pigeon Point,
near the airport.
