Dominica was the last of the Caribbean islands to be colonized by
Europeans due chiefly to the fierce resistance of the native Caribs. Some
3,000 Carib Indians still living on Dominica are the only pre-Columbian
population remaining in the eastern Caribbean.
In 1978, Dominica gained its independence from Britain and in
1980 they elected Mary Eugenia Charles, the first female prime minister in
the Caribbean, who remained in office for 15 years.
Dominica has high, rugged mountains, rainforests, freshwater lakes,
waterfalls, rare indigenous birds and the second-largest boiling lake in the
world. It is also vulnerable to hurricanes.
I have only been to Portmouth and not to Roseau (the capital) so must go back
again some time.
