Pergamum originates from the reign of Alexander the Great and was
expanded by Eumenes II. He established a library here to rival that of
Alexandria in Eygpt. He also built a temple dedicated to the Emperor
Trajan. Schools of mathematics, philosophy, astronomy and
medicine were established here. It also contained the temple of Zeus
(now in the Pergamum Meseum in Berlin). The colonnaded Via Sacra led
down the hill to Asclepeium.
