The Chapter House
Gargolyes in the Chapter House    Gargolyes in the Chapter House

The Chapter House was built in the Decorated Gothic style and is octagonal in shape. It was begun in 1260 and completed in 1286. Its walls contain some of the Minster's finest carvings, most dating from 1270 to 1280.
The ribbed wooden roof is truly a masterpiece of medieval architecture, with colourfully painted panels and a profusion of gilded bosses. The stalls which line the chapter house are topped with a wonderful profusion of gargoyles - some humourous, some depicting souls in torment. I wonder how many of these are recognisable as residents of York at the time?
