The Abbey of St Agatha at Easby in North Yorkshire was founded in 1152
by Roald, Constable of Richmond Castle. It was a house of the
Premonstratensian order founded by St Norbert of Premontre, Laon in
France in 1120. These White Canons followed a code of austerity
similar to that of Cistercian monks although, unlike monks of other
orders, they did preaching and pastoral work in the area.
It's on the eastern bank of the River Swale on the outskirts of Richmond.
When Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries the abbey was abandoned and
left to fall into ruins. St Agatha's Church nearby is also interesting
and is older than the Abbey.
