The Battle of Hastings took place on 14 October 1066, between the Norman army of Duke William of Normandy from France, and the English army led by King Harold II. The battle took place at Senlac Hill, approximately 6 miles (10 km) north-west of Hastings. Harold was killed in the battle and William became the new King of England. The Norman Conquest was the last successful invasion of England.
William the Conqueror vowed to build an abbey where the battle had taken place, with the high altar of its church on the very spot where King Harold fell. This is Battle Abbey.
