The Keep and the back of the Georgian House

The Castle from the Mill Pond

By August 1537 the Castle was reported to have habitable houses and towers within its walls, although they were said to be somewhat decayed and in need of repairs. It was restored and let out to tenants until the 1660s. In 1776 it was reported to be ruinous. Substantial repairs to the Walls were carried out when the Georgian mansion was built on to the Keep between 1808 and 1818.

The Keep

The 12th Century Keep is a ruin but still remains in the Inner Ward. Much of the walls and some of the inner passages can be seen.
The 13th Century enhancements to the Gatehouse included a vaulted basement and a chapel – the sanctuary is built into an oriel window (the bay at the end of the chapel) – another first in Northumbria.
