Nara was the first permanent capital of Japan from 710 to 784 (before 710, the capital had simply been the palace of whichever emperor was ruling).
Nara is still a small city and the centre is very green. The Nara Deer Park is almost in the centre and contains the Todai-ji Temple and Kasuga Taisha Shrine.
